We worked pro bono for the design of this building destined to house Messini's public library. It was crucially important that such a significant place did not merely sink discretely into its surroundings. Rather, our goal was to create a building that would act as a landmark for the entire region.
Its major feature is the distinctive lattice that decorates the construction and resembles a perforated shell. It looks almost as if the building is wearing an elaborate garment or a piece of ornate jewellery. The precise proportions of empty and solid parts are designed to protect visitors from the sun without obscuring a nice view of the outdoors.
The design of the lattice is based on the use of cellular materials which, as well as inspiring our architectural ideas, make a significant contribution our desired energy performance.
